The N64 was okay. Good but not great. It did have some good exclusives (Zelda, Perfect Dark, Mario, Conker's bad Fur Day) but the PS1 had great exclusives of its own in the form of Metal Gear Solid, Grand theft Auto, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Twisted Metal, Tekken, Smackdown and more and the system's controller wasn't a horrendous nightmare. ... of all of those, I played Smackdown extensively, and the rest either not at all or only a tiny bit 8)

They were all quite good in my opinion and were the kind of franchises that established the Playstation as the de facto king of the mid to late 90s, but I have to admit that Final Fantasy 7 and 8 pretty much killed me on the franchise.

The vast majority of those looked absolutely idiotic to me. The ones that I did try (Zelda, Mario 64, Conker, MG titles in general, all FF ever, Resident Evil, twisted Metal) were crap.

Among the best-selling, highest-rated crap ever made, yes. The earlier FF games were nice traditional console RPGs that had fun stories to play through. FF7 was a quality game but it was way too different from what had come before and though I didn't realize it at the time, it (and the next game) turned me off of everything that the series did next. Though the cult-like blind worship that the game gets to this very day from EVERY FF fan has made me all but hate it anyway.

Among the best-selling, highest-rated crap ever made, yes. Hmmm, I wonder if there could be a reason for that other than quality... Yep, there it is.

I don't often take your odd position that popular things that I don't like are only popular because people are stupid, but I make an exception in FF7's case. I bought it right away just like every other FF fan, played through it in its entirety and saw everything that there was to offer. It was well made, it was long and fun to play through, but it was absolutely NOT the best game in the series. The story was garbage, the characters were stupid and the ending was anticlimactic. People only say that it is because that was their introduction to Final Fantasy game and because it's hip to love androgynous Japanese emo-femmes.

Lol yeah you're right, my habit of picking the most critically acclaimed and thoroughly entertaining games has been a real problem for me, I need to rethink my strategy here.

It takes a big man to admit that. I'm proud of you. I've found myself putting too much stock into the opinions of critics recently often passing on things because they weren't well received. But I think I'm breaking that mentality as my opinion shouldn't be shaped by someone judging the technical workings of an entertainment medium who has an "extensive amount of knowledge"

I don't seek the games that are critically acclaimed, I play the games that look good to me and most of them just happen to be critically acclaimed. In fact I'd be curious to see what my lowest-rated game is sometime. Might be Mount and Blade Warband, one of my absolute favorite games of all time and which "only" got like a 77 percent on Gamerankings.
EDIT: Never mind. The Playboy game, people hate that one.

A real-time medieval political / warfare sandbox game. You create a character and then roam an overworld map screen at your leisure, stopping to visit cities for quests or companions or to get in fights with roving bandits or armies of the five randomly warring kingdoms. No fantasy elements like dragons or magic, it's all about combat (usually mounted, hence the title), building your own army, and working your way up the ladder via castle sieges, tournaments, relationships with vassals and lords, etc. It's amazingly deep and there are several ways to play (merchant, sellsword, marshal, king).
The graphics are crummy and it's totally non-linear (no major story, no specific direction) but that's the point, it's all about setting your own goal (usually conquering an enemy faction) and working towards it. It's a lot of fun to build your army and fight in battles and sieges (or attack one of the kingdoms, or just roam around and attack people from all sides).
EDIT: Here's a pretty descriptive review.
