Not sure actually, I've read a few interview about the subject but for some reason I can't remember whose idea it was. I wouldn't think that it was pitched by the actor, Bob Odenkirk, because listening to his own interviews and cast comments about him it appears as though he's a very gracious, humble guy who- being relatively new to drama- kept asking if his performance was alright. This seems like something that the network may have suggested but then I've read and listened to a few stories about creative decisions that were made by the show's staff against what the network preferred so I wouldn't think that they would have let themselves be talked into a spinoff unless they themselves thought that it was a good idea.
I don't know, it sounds like something that creator Vince Gilligan may have tossed out as a joke but which others thought was a good idea. Either way he seems on board with it so hopefully he and the BB team will try to make it as good as they can; all I can hope is that it doesn't retroactively tarnish the original show.

Odenkirk does a lot of subtly funny stuff, but (from what I've seen in interviews and read), thinks of himself as a comic and not an actor. Being such an important part of a dramatic series (admittedly, often in the "comic relief" role) was probably bewildering to him. He's from a pretty successful "graduating class" of comedy writers... he was with Conan O'Brien at SNL, and wrote for Sandler, Foley, etc. I was a fan of "Mr. Show" which was almost entirely written by him and David Cross (Tobias Funke from Arrested Devleopment), and gave a bunch of unfunny comedians their start 8)

That gels with everything I've seen and heard. I knew very little about him before BB but had heard his name on several occasions, and I liked him on BB immediately. While he seemed comfortable with the role onscreen he was apparently very concerned with whether he did a good job and the rest of the crew basically laughed off the notion that he had anything to worry about. I later listened to an Opie and Anthony interview with him and he struck me as surprisingly genuine, friendly, respectful and intelligent. Seems like a really good guy who genuinely wants to do a good job so I think that with proper care and the same crew a spinoff could possibly work quite well. You slipped and called Farley "Foley". I know that they're both fat goofs, but...

Actually it was a straight-up Freudian slip. "Foley" was the name of the motivational speaker character created FOR Farley by Odenkirk. "Matt Foley." He lived in a van down by the river. 8)

I rather enjoyed the ad where Batman took the Batmobile through the taco bell drive-thru.

So, after hearing for years how awesome Breaking Bad is, I somehow found my way to the Wikipedia page today (I honestly can't recall how I wound up there) to read the basic summary of the show. The more I read the more compelling it became, and I started looking up information on the characters and seasonal developments. While I figured that it wouldn't matter if I spoiled the show because I had no real intent on watching it, going ahead and spoiling it for myself has ironically compelled me to check it out now. So, I was wondering who here are fans of the show and what you guys can tell me about it. And again, I've spoiled the whole damn thing for myself (literally from beginning to end, as if I was reading a book upon which the show is based) so you don't have to worry about ruining anything for me. Though anyone who doesn't want the show to be spoiled for them should probably not go past this post. I want to watch Breaking Bad but I just don't have the time.

Can't endorse it enough. At roughly 48 minutes per episode, you owe it to yourself to squeeze in the pilot one of these days.

Ah, that one. Yep, plays during a pretty important scene. How'd you know about that? And how did I miss this post all week?

I hadn't even seen the finale yet and I was so $#@!ing sick of that song by noon the day after the finale premiered that I wanted to shoot my radio. I hate when they use a song on a TV and suddenly everyone realizes they love it.

It's understandable though, if a song is good (as I feel that one is) and thousands (if not millions) of people are suddenly exposed to it all at once, it's going to be big for a while. What bugs me is when a song isn't particularly old OR relatively obscure but because it shows up in a movie or something people are instantly playing it everywhere, all the time.

I personally didn't really like the song... but "song trending" is obnoxious even if I do happen to like it

I found it catchy myself, felt that it was really fitting. A little on the nose but not as much as the second episode which had a guy running into a tree and subsequently being carried off by Walt, a scene accompanied by a song that's lyrics were "You know you knock me out. You really move me". That was about the dumbest that the show got for me, so fortunately it was just that one throwaway moment.

You've got quite a gift for understatement. ... at least it wasn't Crystal Blue Persuasion (I actually really like that song, but that would have been way too much)
