While I was watching the commercials for the Xbox One and PS4 I noticed a few things about their marketing strategies that was kind of intriguing and such, so I decided to do a full analysis on them and what they are portraying, as well as their effectiveness t the time they were released, and to who they were targeting.
PS4
The first commercial I will be analyzing is that of the original Greatness Awaits.
This video was released at a very strategic point, when the "real" gamers were busy researching the next gen consoles and when the Xbox One had come out with their stupid policies. This commercial was of course completely aimed at that demographic using nostalgia, current big titles(like Skyrim), and future games along with a cool little narrative about being something great that really gets you pumped up. This was definitely amazing marketing by Sony considering the time frame that they did it.
Next up is the Interface Commercial
Okay, one thing you'll notice is the fact that this guy appears to be in his garage and that he is a relatively average guy. Of course this is basic marketing strategy(Let's just go ahead and ignore the fact that he's downloading a 35 GB game at an impossible speed and that he buys a 60 dollar game at a mere casual mention of his friend and that this guy is over 8 chapters into Knack and still hasn't figured out how to use all of the 2 regular attacks to his advantage yet). First of all it advertises the interface pretty well, showing off the fact that it's fast and easy to use. It also shows the cool little featuring of being able to pause your game, go to the store, download another game, then jump right back into your game(This was a feature that was sorely missed on the PS3).
Next up we have my personal favorite, the Perfect Day commercial
This commercial came out about a month before the PS4 came out and was used to further increase the hype of the PS4. This commercial was about friendship and spending your time gaming with friends(Which by the way is a big thing this go around). It does this incredibly well, showing friends singing a catchy tune terribly(So as to make them more relatable) while competing in various next gen games. This commercial targets everyone, and is relatable to everyone. This one was great all around and you actually enjoy watching the commercial without need of almost naked chicks.
And finally we have the Launch Day Trailer
This one is all about the games. Nothing special to say here, but it is a neat launch trailer...(I hate the song a lot though)
Overall Analysis:
One thing you should have noted is that there are no kids or families in any of these. Another thing you should have noted is that Sony is leaning towards using the friendship strategy quite a lot. Also the commercials are amazingly made, and you can really see Sony making a hard effort in their marketing department. Also it seems like they are going to use their commercials to target certain demographics according to what time frame those demographics are looking into buying a console. Expect them to target casuals more by the end of this year. Another thing to note is the fact that these commercials only feature games, no TV or movies. This is quite possibly the riskiest move Sony made, because so far there console is less appealing to casual gamers.
Xbox One
This commercial focuses on all aspects of the Xbox One, from the Sports, to the games, to the movies, to the TV shows. It also advertises the Xbox One's features quite nicely. It's focused on the aspect of people who wish for their lives to be more than just the average boring daily grind and what something more exciting out of life.
This one is technically two commercials but whatever. The first one seems...to...um...appeal to Woman's need for dominance? Advertise the fact that someone can come in and change your stuff just with a simple voice command? Maybe I'm looking at it in a negative light, I don't know. It appeals to women gamers though, I guess...
The second commercial is about sports and the ability to play, communicate, and watch stuff with your friends. I think it's a cool little advertisement that appeals to Americna Football fans.
I'm going to have to ask someone else to analyse this commercial. I'm definitely starting to show bias...
Overall Conclusion:
Again you'll notice no families and no kids. This is pretty weird, especially considering Microsoft wants the Xbox One to be the central entertainment device. Anyway before I start going on biased fanboy review I'm going to ask someone else to review the Xbox One commercials over. Thank you to whoever does this...
