It was to appeal to those weird people who liked Parappa as 5 year olds. He actually has a pretty large fanbase. Me personally? I dislike him... I don't care if it has a big fanbase, it's stupid, and that's my point. God of War has a huge fanbase, too... but it's still QTE: The Game, and I don't care. God of War also ripped off its only good story from Heracles. Still they had so many iconic characters that weren't in the game...(Mostly due to the dreaded copyright)

Crash and Spyro were once Sony owned, but then they sold them to Activision. Those are probably the most iconic ones I can think of right now... There were also Sony characters that Sony was going to put in through DLC(Abe and Dart for example), but decided not to because the game didn't meet the sales expectations of Sony.
