The problem with the deviations from canon, as with Lord of the Rings, etc, is never simply the details that they change. It's the way that the details alter the essential themes of the story and characters. That's why there are some movies that deviate from canon that I like, and others that I cannot stand.
Essentially; if you're changing what makes the characters tick, then you're not "telling the story in a new way"... you're using the names of existing characters to sell your own bullshit vision, and I find that highly irritating.

My one hope in all of this is that they get the Venom story right before they reboot again. Venom is one of my favorite all time comic characters, and Spider-Man 3 did him no justice at all. I felt that they ruined the character and I don't even read the source material. From what I could tell the third movie did justice to pretty much no one, least of all the fans. The one thing I enjoyed about the movie was the Sandman and even that aspect of the film was dead and buried by the time he became a skyscraper-sized monster who crushed the city under the weight of half a dozen simultaneous plots.

I can honestly say that I have no idea what Raimi was thinking with Spider-Man 3. For a guy known for relatively simple plots and strong character building, it struck me as really odd that he crammed so many characters into one movie, and tried to give all of them some kind of story arc.

We had all this going on in Spider-Man 3:
The feud against The Sandman The feud against Venom / Brock / the Symbiote suit The feud against Osborn Jr. The introduction of Gwen Stacy Parker's relationship with MJ The "revelation" about Uncle Ben's murder and Parker's quest for revenge
I mean seriously, that's three distinct villains, two romance narratives and the resurrection of an old character arc- half a dozen different plots going on, and ultimately being resolved, in the same single film. Focus on any two of these stories would have been enough for one film, but six? The movie is literally almost three hours long, and it feels like it.
I could swear that I read an interview or otherwise heard reports that Sam Raimi was apologetic or regretful about the decisions he made on this film, and all I can say is that I hope this is true. Now I'm going to head to bed and in the afternoon I'll throw on A Simple Plan to remind me of the good films that Raimi is capable of producing from someone else's material.

Raimi definitely did say that he wasn't happy with the way Spider-Man 3 turned out. I know that he was pressured to include Venom, so that might be part of the issue.

Sandman sucks. I hate him, lol. I think they should've left him out of the movie and focused on Venom (and not include New Goblin...that was the worst part).

I like Sandman, he's a great villain because he's not some cackling maniac who wants to end the world. He's a very human guy (despite his powers) with motivations that make sense. He's a villain for the most part because he has no other opportunities.

All of which is probably why he was the one compelling aspect of Spider-Man 3 for me.
Anyway bah, sleepies.

I like the look of this Movie, I like Spider-Man stuff, The TV Shows from the 90's i watched the repeats of in the mornings back in early 2000's, I watch Ultimate Spider-Man now, I begged to go to the first 3 Spider-Man movies, I played the games, I had the toys....
Sadly never read a single Comic Book as I have no idea where I'd pick them up at.

Yep. Amazon has them I'm sure, as well as Marvel's internet setup (which is a good place to get them rather cheaply). Torrent sites, of course, have them for free.

I was not a fan of the Amazing Spiderman Film. I saw it in the theater and don't think I will be doing the same for the sequel. I will likely check it out on video.

Wasn't Alistair the villain in the video game tie-in, though?
How much do we want to bet that it's only buildup for the third installment though.
