On the old one I had AVG free edition downloaded. Looking at it AVG says to support Windows 7 but 8. I've heard some good talk about Norton, that one supposed to cover any Windows OS.
But I'm just not sure if I even need anything or if Windows 8 comes with protection already. If I do get a virus protection, it'll probably be a basic free one. That's all I had on my other laptop and she went for years.
Dunno, any recommendations on what to do or get?

I have Avast and Norton on my computer. I prefer Avast, personally. They both have free versions.

I use Norton... It does the job fairly well.

I keep seeing Norton as a paid program.

I keep seeing Norton as a paid program. You can pay for a top notch anti-virus version of Norton (same with most anti-virus programs that have free trials).

I'm not looking for a 30 day trail, but a free program. AVG had basic protection free and pain for many other services. I seen some info on the Avast, sounds like a good free program.

Yeah, Avast is my favorite. I don't know which are trials though, because I have both of them not free (well, they're not supposed to be free anyways).

I use AVG free without any issues. I used to use the full AVG and never really had a problem with it but it expired. Tried Avast for a while, didn't like the interface and popups. I also installed a copy on my dad's computer and it constantly harasses him about upgrades or whatever. Hate Norton antivirus, it's known as one of the weakest, most invasive and most resource-heavy antiviruses among those in the pirate community.

I would like to go with AVG again but I don't see any as listed as supporting Windows 8, which this laptop got, they list up as far as Windows 7. I've always used AVG myself, which is why I'm unsure of others. Gotta say though, you make Norton sound quite bad.

I've used some pretty horrible ones as well. Hence why I have both Avast and Norton.

I've never used Norton myself, it always comes with a new computer but I reformat my computers immediately and start everything fresh. So I can't speak for it personally, but I hear that it's pretty crappy. I guess the protection is okay, I never really hear much about that, it's the allegations of computer slowdown and difficulty to completely uninstall that people always seem to discuss. Sorry to hear about Windows 8, I'm avoiding that touchscreen crap like the plague.

I have Norton, It's not slowed my laptop down & I've had no problem removing it in the past.

Seems AVG is compatible with Windows 8, I clicked a ad on here for AVG and got XP, Vista, 7, 8 i the info. So I downloaded it, it's what I know and trust. I guess the site I visited hadn't updated the OS listings.
