Harry Potter and the half-blooded Prince.... Better. Hairy Potter and the Fresh Prince of Azkaban. Stop with the jokes.

GTA conversation wasn't anywhere near as pervasive as the comic stuff is. Not anywhere close. It didn't come up as often or last as long, and even if it DID wind up everywhere, LOL Bullshit. I call bullshit on this all day, every day. The GTA conversation was in EVERY $#@!ING THREAD. It was incessant. At least it makes sense that comic book stuff pops up in the movie thread and the TV thread, comic books being the primary source for a goodly portion of modern movies and TV.

Not at all, but believe what you want.
You know what I call bullshit on? The idea that comic book movies make up a "goodly portion" of the industry. In a given year hundreds of films are released, comic book movies being perhaps five of them, tops. But hey, I breathe air every day. It's everywhere. It's a part of me everywhere I go and during everything I do. It makes up a goodly portion of all our lives. Let's talk about air in movie and game threads a dozen times a week.

Oh. meh... I don't care about Pots whatsoever. I like the first two movies. Nothing else. You like the first two movies and none of the others? My lord, the first two were by far the worst in the series. Well, to be fair, much of 5 and 6 were boring, but in general that series only improved as it went along. 3 and 8 are commonly praised as the best whereas I thought that the highlight was 4. No one likes the first two except jerks.

The first Harry Potter movie was by far the most enjoyable for me, but I actually enjoyed the entire series. It was more or less good storytelling, though some things seemed very forced to me (like the Ron/Hermione relationship). The first one just captured the feel of entering a wondrous world where the rules are suddenly very different.

Though the first was the worst to me (and that's relative, it isn't by itself a bad movie), I agree with your assessment. It's by far the most "wondrous" of the films, and no doubt fittingly so. It's also the most childish and naively innocent of them all - again, that's by design, but it's for that reason that I find it the least entertaining. It's just so warm and fluffy, and some of those effects (like the troll in the bathroom) are cringe-worthy.
I have to give it credit though. When I first saw the movie in the spring of 2002 it was on a whim, I decided to roll my eyes and finally sit down to see what the hell everyone was blathering about. I was prepared to hate what I assumed to be a sappy kiddie movie but to my surprise I wound up answering all the queries of "so how was it" with "you know, it actually wasn't anywhere near as bad as I thought it would be".
I didn't stick with it though, I became interested again when I heard that the third film was darker but my girlfriend at the time laughed me into submission so I didn't check it out. Then a few years later I was bored and stumbled onto a Youtube clip of Harry dueling Voldemort from the fourth film, and from literally that moment I was a fan.

I tend to think that normally I'd be more "into" the darker toned stuff, just based on my general tendencies... but I felt like the series became increasingly predictable and forced.

I watched the first 2 Harry Potter movies. I thought they were pretty good. I also went to see Half-blood prince? Dark-blood prince?, something like that lol in theaters with my sister.

Half Blood Prince. I saw that one in the theater because it was only one of two HP books that I read (the other being the final book which came after) and really enjoyed it. I was disappointed because the movie dwelt far more on the stuff that I liked least about the book (romance, primarily) and largely condensed many of the most compelling parts (everything having to do with Voldemort and Dumbledore). The last twenty minutes were excellent but I forget most of the other 100 or so. As for predictability, I think much of the story was actually fairly predictable. Pretty much everything about the Horcruxes was mysterious and compelling though. If there was any plot thread throughout the series that captured my imagination, it was that. That and Snape. I just realized that this would be so much better suited in the movie thread, I could go on about the Potter movies for some time.

The rest of I've completely forgotten. I remember thinking it was okay though after I watched it. I was just confused because it was the first one I ever watched. My sister (who's a Harry Potter nut) also persuaded me to watch the first 2 with her a year or so ago. I liked those better and was less confused.

Yeah you can't start with the sixth story in a seven-story series. I thought that the end of Half-Blood Prince was perfect. It flowed almost exactly how I imagined it when reading the book, and the acting and delivery of crucial lines was spot-on. I also greatly enjoyed the very beginning of the film- not even the opening scenes of the movie proper, the actual first shots themselves. It begins with the aftermath of the previous film and Harry's looking dazed and recalling terrifying events as flashbulbs go off in his face. Then a concerned Dumbledore escorts him away, a slow pan of Dumbledore's hand on Harry's shoulder as they turn to leave in slow-motion, all while sad voices softly sing a creepy tune on the background score. Jump cut to the film's title. It's hard to adequately explain, you'd have to see it again to know what I'm talking about. It actually gave me goosebumps the first time I saw it, it was so oppressively grim and the atmosphere had been set so strongly that I settled in thinking that I was in for a treat of a movie. Too bad the next hour or so was completely forgettable.

Meaning you were happy to see it end? I dunno, I didn't care about the series at all at first but I have to admit that once I experienced it as a whole I found it to be excellent. The second to last film turned the crappiest part of the book into something watchable and the last film was altogether fantastic.

I guess I can see the Harry Potter/Twilight comparison, though from a writer's perspective... they're light years apart. Potter is a modern masterpiece. Twilight is the worst kind of pablum.

I "made them look the same" because for me its the same. Somewhere deep inside i love HP but there's no love for Twilight. I'm still waiting for the Twilight movie where Blade kills all the vampires *sigh*

For me the point of comparison is in how obnoxious the fanbases are 8)

Harry Potter wins(loses?) out by a huge margin in that area.
