(William Wallace's speech from Braveheart is on almost every "top" list for inspirational speeches. How many people realize it was ripped off directly from this one?) "We few, we happy few, we band of brothers. He that bleeds with me today shall be my brother." Shakespeare at his best. That looks really good.

"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers. He that bleeds with me today shall be my brother." Shakespeare at his best. I knew that, but most battle speeches are ripped off from that one. Also I personally always thought Aragorn's speech right before the siege of the Black Gate was the best pre battle speech of all time. That and the speech Samuel L. Jackson gave in that crappy Jaws rip off right before he got eaten.

Also I always thought the Braveheart speech was kind of overrated.

I enjoyed Rocky 6. It was good enough. It's a real shame that they couldn't just let it go and they're making more movies.

Also I just realized that Samuel L. Jackson dies a lot in movies.

Shakespeare's "Henry the Vth" Great play. Truth. It did become the "prototype" for the 20th and 21st century pre-battle cinematic speech. Nah. Not even the best in Lord of the Rings "Fear no darkness. Arise! Arise riders of Theoden! Spears shall be shaken! Shields shall be splintered! A sword day, a red day, er the sun rises!" If that doesn't make you want to behead an orc, you're no man at all.

I always thought Theoden and Aragorn were both absolutely great, and can't choose one above the other. Theoden has the more motivational speech, making it the better battle speech, but Aragorn has the better speech overall.

Given, I think Mortensen, brilliant as he is as an actor, was absolutely dead wrong for Aragorn, and every scene where he spoke was evidence of just how bad a choice he really was... so that might color my perceptions of his speech 8)

Actually reading the speech over again, it's not really that good. Aragorn's speech is pretty bad, and would probably fail at rallying a bunch of really scared men to fight to the death in a battle where they have no hope. ^I'm only keeping that here cause it's funny. It was supposed to be Aragorn's speech. "Hold your ground! Hold your ground! Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers, I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields, when the age of men comes crashing down, but it is not this day! This day we fight!! By all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you stand, Men of the West!!!" Yeah you're right Wild, his speech really isn't that great, but it definitely seemed a lot better in its deliverance to me.

The "not this day" stuff really works. Especially, as you said, with the delivery.

I'm with Knight, I thought that Theoden's speech was epically rousing. Easily one of the best speeches I've ever heard. That whole scene, beginning with the horns and seeing the Rohirrim crest the hill, was an electric experience that made me just feel great to be there in that theater.

For some reason I always felt Theoden's speech was underwhelming, while Aragorn's speech made me feel empowered. I remember as a kid when I heard Aragorn's speech I actually jumped up out of my seat and yelled as the men charged.

I remember as a kid when I heard Aragorn's speech I actually jumped up out of my seat and yelled as the men charged. Yeah when I was watching Theoden's speech I literally became aware of my excitement- I had already really enjoyed the film to that point so by the time that scene rolled I could feel my adrenaline building and my teeth clenching a bit like "Aw YEAH! It's ON! This is gonna be AWESOME!!!" I mean cliche though it is, it's scenes such as this that make me a fan of the movies. I can't overstate how much I loved that scene. There is, however, one teeny little visual detail that can totally take you out of it. So much so that once you notice it, you might never be able to enjoy it correctly again. It's one of those "wristwatch on the soldier" type of goofs but not exactly, and I hesitate to point it out. That movie just gives the feels. Since we are talking about did anyone notice viggo mortenson voice change throughout the movies it's always kinda annoyed me Every male goes through these changes. It happened to Edward Furlong in T2 and it happened to Viggo in Lord of the Rings. Don't hold it against him.

Do you mean the fact that the riders of Rohan are almost all female actresses with fake facial hair?
