A robot samurai. More stupid than talking gorillas with mind control. Sure. That was the 70s. This kind of crap is inexcusable in 2014. No it's not. Not at all. Mind control and talking animals are both very much so still heavily used in today in all sorts of mediums. What's so "inexcusable" about the two being combined?

No it's not. Gorilla Grodd is awesome in any era. I thought he was talking about Planet of the Apes. Uh... First of all Planet of the Apes didn't have any mind control. Secondly The reboot has so far been extremely successful both critically and commercially.

A giant samurai robot is ridiculous and corny in a modern serious movie. I don't think robot samurai are any more ridiculous than ninja, to be honest. Samurai, unlike ninja, actually existed, so "robot samurai" is only one step removed from reality, just like ninja 8) We're talking about a setting where a guy's boned were laced with an unbreakable metal, but there is no explanation at all as to how his bones do the basic, normal amount of flexing that human bones have to do for a person to have a normal life. My problem with Robo-Samurai isn't that it was "too outlandish"... my problem is "why?" Why not simply have the traditional Silver Samurai from the comics do his thing?

As far as I know, there is no mind control in Planet of the Apes. ... and you're not supposed to take Gorilla Grodd "seriously". He's for fun. You know, like comic books are supposed to be? Don't tell Nolan fanboys that. They will chastise you

Giant robots: Giant Samurai: Also I know this is a video game but I still think it qualifies: I can't find any robot samurai either though.

... there is actually a robot Samurai in Transformers 4. One of the "whacky" new Autobots. My son thinks he's awesome.

Transformers is hardly serious. So what would you consider a "serious" movie?

This guy, right here. Drift, apparently. The new Transformers movie is fun right up to the point that the Transformers show up, btw. After that it's all down hill. I realize that the point of the franchise is to sell toys, but the revolving door cast of Autobots makes it really difficult to care. In this one aside from Optimus and Bumblebee, we're told that all of the Autobots we've previously seen are dead. Instead we're given "the filthy four" (yes, that term is actually used in the movie itself), Autobots who we've never seen before even though Optimus clearly knows them and considers them good friends. Where they keep getting new Autobots and Decepticons from, I'll never know. The Filthy Four are; Hound (voiced by John Goodman, I'm fairly certain), a fat robot(?) who loves guns and constantly demonstrates how many guns he happens to have in virtually every scene in which he appears. When he first shows up, he's taking guns off of his person and dropping them for no apparent reason, I guess just so that we get that he's got them. He also smokes a giant metal cigar. Yep. Autobots smoke. Who knew? ... oh, and the cigar is also a gun. I'm not kidding. Drift (voiced by Ken Wataanbe, whom I used to respect), a vaguely racist character who is a Samurai robot that speaks in an over-the-top Japanese accent (because apparently Cybertron also has a Japan). When we first meet him he spouts some nonsense about honor, and then immediately attempts to literally kill Bumblebee because he says that Bumblebee has been a bad leader while Optimus was away. Crosshairs (voiced by the guy who voiced Bender on Futurama), a British or Australian (I'm not sure which) Autobot because apparently Cybertron has Britain and/or Australia too. Crosshairs is mildly less ridiculous than the other 3 Autobots, if only because he doesn't have much of a personality to speak of. He does have parachutes and a built-in "trench coat" in his robot form, because those are things that robots logically would have. In the scuffle over leadership, he asserts that he'll lead once all of the other autobots have killed one-another, "so that there's no hassle." I'm not sure if it's meant to indicate that he's really stupid or really clever, but I took it as the former since most of the Autobots seem strikingly stupid. and Bumblebee, who apparently still hasn't recovered his ability to speak normally, but "hilariously" uses at least one audio clip of Sam from the previous Transformers movies in his dialogue this time around. ... and then there are the Dinobots.

Transformers is hardly serious. Agreed. However, neither was Wolverine.

Oh, I'm surprised my parents haven't wanted to go see it yet. The three of us have seen all of the other Michael Bay Transformers in theatres, and we don't go to the theater very often.

Ha! I get it! Tokyo Drift! Apparently based on my Wikipedia research, this "drift" character predates the "Tokyo Drift" movie, though obviously not in this exact form. The name was intended as a reference to drift racing however, as his original automotive form was a drift car.

If you can just turn off your brain and enjoy an action film, you'll probably have a good time. It was very "Michael Bay" (except that I can honestly say for the first time in the entire series... I always knew who was fighting who, since the fight scenes weren't all blurry ad high-speed) in most regards. People are going to pan me for saying this, but I really liked Wahlberg's character. IMO he's the best human in the series to date (which is not saying much, I realize).

It's been years since I gave a shit about Transformers, so I'm probably wrong here.
Last I remember, Drift was a character from the later run of Optimus in Generation 1. Around the same time they introduced Transformers with three forms, but before the movie where Optimus bit the dust. His thing was that he was "Hip" and "Jive," yo, because apparently that didn't work for Jazz. His alternate form was a sports car, that could also pull out wings. Yep. Also, he wasn't Japanese.
