So Christmas has come and gone and since I was a good little boy, I finally got to get my hands on WWE 2K14.
Now I review my experiences after jumping in for a few hours.
I did an exhibition match to test out the new speed of the game and the random tweaks made to the gameplay.
It feels largely the same as '13 which gets no complaints from me, but the game feels faster and almost more responsive than prior titles thanks to the new running system and the refreshed reversal system.
A few things of note, catapult finishers don't seem that ridiculous when you execute them in the game, it actually feels rather natural.
The standing lockup's drag system was overhauled tremendously and I'm incredibly grateful for that as dragging my opponents to table, ropes or ladders is easy as pie eating.
The elbow of disdain onto a chair will more than likely launch said chair into Michael Cole's sternum.
A few things that annoyed me to the point of, dare I say, pissing me off:
The supine drag system removed the double foot drag and the head drag. You can only drag your opponent by the sides of his body, which rather irks me after I put so much time learning how to drag with the utmost of efficiency.
Alternate finishers do not work.
They don't. Edge cannot Edgecute someone through the announce table. Roman cannot powerbomb an opponent through the announce table. Christian cannot have three finishers in the Killswitch, spear and frog splash as he did last year.
That's a near gamebreaker for me.
After getting used to the changes in gameplay I jumped directly into Thirty Years of Wrestlemania because Edge wasn't going to unlock himself.
Everything felt smooth and responsive and I really liked how Yukes implemented the weight system. I only wish it had been a mainstay for certain characters.
I did experience a considerable amount of slowdown during the Ultimate Warrior vs Hulk Hogan, given the performers it may have been an astounding attention to detail by the developers, but I experienced more slowdown when I got to Jericho vs Triple H, which disproved my theory.
It tends to happen when there are too many camera cuts so I'll have to remember to turn those off and test that theory.
All in all I suppose it could be a fun mode for anyone who hasn't seen a good majority of the WWE's history, but as a guy who has seen the matches, knows the story and knows the spots, it just gets a bit tiresome, especially as you're waiting for the Wrestlemania moment to occur.
Fun fact inbound: 87% of all Wrestlemania moments were the referee being knocked unconscious.
Sure it's fun to watch our Charles Robinson stand-in get clobbered, but it hardly merits the honor of a Wrestlemania moment.
After getting impatient as it was probably 1:00 AM at that point, I decided to play through some universe, in my opinion, the star player of the franchise.
Except I bumped the difficulty from whatever the default was up to legend.
The proverbial butt was delivered unto thee. Repeatedly.
The first match was a nice feel of back and forth which was nice because in past titles if you got the upper hand, it stayed with you until you either won, or got screwed over by the pin system.
This was back and forth action the had me on constant guard.
The second match took off...
And I could not reverse a move for the life of me. I was on the defensive throughout the entire match, I could barely get any offense going. And for every move I hit, the AI reversed three of them and hit six more.
I lost that match.
Here's hoping the AI is really that good and I'm not simply suffering from the jump between titles.
So those are just a few of my scattered thoughts based off a few hours spent on the new title.
Things are shaping out very nicely and I look forward to playing it again for the next twelve months.
This concludes my review-like nonsense, you're now free to point and laugh because if you've made it this far, by golly you deserve that right!
Sincerely, PinkSparklePuff
