A few minutes ago I saw that TIME magazine declared The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug to be among the ten best films of the year, despite the fact that the same author was less than thrilled with the first film. I found this interesting and thought I'd mention it in "the movie thread" but when I went to do so I realized "Oh wait, I guess we don't have one". There are some threads for specific movies but none that seem to be meant as a catch-all generic place where people can just pop in and say "Hey, I saw this today" or "This new trailer looks sweet" so I figured that I might as well make one. Hopefully this can serve as a place for people to just BS about movies in general. I suppose I'll start with the aforementioned article, referring to the second of The Hobbit films that's due out shortly. entertainment.time.com/2013/12/04/arts-and-entertainment/So anyway have fun and PLEASE PROVIDE CLEAR SPOILER WARNINGS!

To be fair, The Hobbit movie didn't exactly have much competition this year.
Also did Furious 6 really get number 6th best movie of the year? What?

And for all I know the Hobbit movie might suck terribly but I do find it interesting that someone who found the first film plodding and overlong loved the second one enough to claim it as one of the best films of the year as well as closer in spirit to the original Rings trilogy. On its own that's interesting news for a fan of the series (the author's approval of some of the other films notwithstanding). EDIT: I just ran across this article, apparently those at the premiere found the film to be noticeably superior as well. furiousfanboys.com/2013/12/early-desolation-of-smaug-reaction-is-promising/As for Expedient Angry Vehicular Racing Criminals 62, I've been hearing a startling amount of praise for it. People I know who never expressed an interest in the franchise seemed to have a great time with the newest one and a look at the critics' consensus on Rottentomatoes shows a series of average to poorly-rated films of decreasing quality with a sudden spike in approval for the last two. I can't honestly say what people have embraced about the most recent entries but embrace them they apparently have.

I did like the catching fire movie. The Hobbit: DoS I'm looking forward to immensely, so to Anchorman 2.
I can't remember the titles of that many films I saw this year at the cinema. I've seen plenty though.

Gosling is trying get revenge on the cop who killed his brother in Thailand. Nichols windin refin directed it.
I was let down bye this movie cause ot felt like it only 30 mins of dialogue in this 1:45 mins movie. Some people loved I was let down cause I'm a big fan of both these guys.
The movie is shot beautifully but that's the only thing it had going for me

Elizabeth banks fantastic actress I keep hearing great things about both Hunger Games movies, the newest one especially. I'm not at all familiar with the books but supposedly they and the films are all really good, the second film in particular being praised as closer to the source material. I did like the catching fire movie. The Hobbit: DoS I'm looking forward to immensely, so to Anchorman 2. I'm looking forward to the next Hobbit as well. I catch, or try to catch, a movie at the theater every Christmas Eve. It's a tradition going back to when i was a kid. Last year I had a lot of fun at An Unexpected Journey and with all this buzz that the new one is a darker, tighter, and generally more satisfying Hobbit film I'm getting really anxious to check it out.

I recommend them. Very good movies. Not to many movies with a grand scale are good and these are. Hobbit was a pleasant watch last as well I'm looking forward to it. I think Martin freeman(bilbo) is a underated actor

Kevin smith has a new horror coming out called tusk Did you see only God forgives? My friend in Wisconsin was telling me about this. He said that he was listening to a Kevin Smith podcast while he (Smith) was stoned and talking about some weird story he'd read about a personal ad where some weird old man was looking for someone to dress up like a walrus and entertain him in a bid to replace the actual walrus that he used to care for and love as a friend. He said that the more he thought about it the more it sounded like a movie so what the hell, he'd go ahead and make it. I told my friend that while on one hand it's really cool that Smith is able to do what he loves and is going ahead with a story that interests him regardless of what other might think, it's also kind of funny that anyone looking to make a case about how far he's fallen as an artist need only look at the fact that the guy went from being "the indie darling who made Clerks, Mallrats and Chasing Amy" to "the guy who got stoned and made a horror movie about a guy in a walrus suit". Also, it should have been called "I Am The Walrus".
