Both the Xbox One and PS4 are off to a good start...
They've practically sold out every single unit they've shipped so far.

I don't care how many they've sold... take a look at the lists of best selling books, albums, etc, and you'll see a cavalcade of low-quality crap.
I want to see stats on fail rates, know what freebies each is giving away on their live services, etc.

Yes, well, the majority of the stories on the internet also claim that the XBox 360 is still failure prone and mention nothing of the PS3, despite the fact that the 360 has had a lower fail rate than the PS4 for the last two or three years 8)

Whoever claimed that 1/3rd of launch 360's failed needs to have their head removed from their ass so that someone from Microsoft can sue their ass off for telling such an outrageously ridiculous lie. 8)

I can't find any reliable numbers myself.
In general, the reason I'm inclined to reject stories like the one you just linked is the method of data collection. It just doesn't pass the smell test. "Well EB games said it was around 30% in a conference call to it's Canadian retailers." Very scientific, that.
Microsoft acknowledged an unacceptably high fail rate for the launch consoles (which is why they extended the warranty to 3 years), but I can't find any numbers from them, either. Although it defies all logic, I guess it is somehow possible that nearly 1/3rd of the launch consoles failed... but all of the "data" that I see is strictly anecdotal, and seriously causes me to question how, with that being the case, 360 managed to so dominate the last generation in so many areas.

I can't find reliable numbers for the fail rates of either the PS3 or the Xbox 360 at all.

No numbers on the actual fail rate specifically, but MS took a hit in the range of 1 billion plus April - June of that year between repairing consoles and the extended warranty, so... maybe 1/3rd is accurate. Insane!

I have a friend that got one of the original xbox 360's and last time I talked to him about it he claimed it still worked and he's a pretty reliable guy. I don't see why he'd lie about it.
That being said the main reason I picked PS3 over 360 was because I had a lot of friends and acquaintances who had had their 360's red ring on them. Plus from reports on the computer the PS3 seemed more reliable at the time. (early 2010)
So I bought PS3 and had it 13 months and 1 day and it yellow lighted on me. On my second PS3 now and I've had it about 2 1/2 years and haven't had any problems out of it so far. *knock on wood*
The PS4 and Xboxone both seem to be off to great starts. The failure rates do seem high though.

Obviously it's strictly anecdotal, but I never had any problems with my 360 unless you count "being stolen" as a hardware problem 8)

I've always had terrible luck with systems. Just sayin. That's why reliability is pretty high on my list when it comes to picking a console.

Here is my experiences, bit of a mixed bag, but still favors Sony.
Friends original 360 - RROD after a year. Friends 360 slim - Fine after years of use. Friends 80GB PS3 - Fine after years of use, right up till he sold it (he wanted the 500GB model). Friends PS3 Super Slim - A little freeze prone, but nothing major yet. My own 360 slim - Fine after a few years use. My own PS3 slim (320GB) - Fine after a few years use.
So from this gen I've seen a complete failure on the XBOX side while minor errors on the PS3 side.
As far as last gen, completely one sided. Never had a issue with any PS2 console wise, while every XBOX seems to have some kind of quark. But this this is PS3 and 360, not PS2 and XBOX.

I went through 2 ps2 slims that eventually started put scratches on disk. I hate those models. Give me a Fat PS2 anyday. I bought a fat Ps2 from Gamestop sometime back and haven't had any problems out of it yet. I also went through 2 gamecubes but I was pretty rough on those things and I deserved to have them tear up.

I have a PS2 slim and it's still working just as good as the day I bought it, over 8 or 9 years ago.
The problem is that every single controller(I have 6 of them) has a broken start button. Every button but the start button works, and because almost every PS2 game requires you to press start to play...
yeah.

The only time I've ever had a broken console in fact...
was when I threw my PS1 out a window.
