For some reason it refused to post these two images despite multiple edits in the post above, so here they are: Current Gen vs next gen PS4 vs Xbox One

The XBox one and PS4 look pretty much the same.

The XBox one and PS4 look pretty much the same. I agree. The Xbone has more shadows which makes it pop a bit more, and the PS4 has more detail in place of those shadows.

PS4 seems a bit brighter to show detail. XO seems to lose some detail in the shadows as it's darker.

I think the difference in current gen to next gen is incredible. That NBA 2k14 photo and the wolf photo are especially incredible.

Only 400 - 500 dollars for more detailed shadows and greater emphasis on DRM than last gen? I'd be crazy NOT To rush out and buy one of these.

This is because games can show more detail, therefore making the product look much more improved. Also the current gen games are incredibly blurry when compared to next gen games.

Unless you were referring to PS4 vs Xbox One, in which you would be right.

I've been saying for years that we're approaching the plateau graphically and that the next generation would hardly look any different, and judging from these comparisons I feel I was correct. The difference between these screenshots is, at best, the difference between choosing medium and high textures in your average PC game. If this is honestly the best that the launch games can look it makes me sad that these systems were even made. We could have gone another five years without the need for next-gen shadows, I think.

These titles were all ports of current gen games Mike. In other words they've only just touched the surface of what these consoles are capable of graphics wise.

The variations aren't significant enough to make me want to leap into next gen any faster than I previously did.

That's exactly my point- they're ports of current-gen games. If they expect to wow people, they should be demonstrating how much better a current-gen game can look on their system. I've lived through almost the entire existence of the console gaming industry from its birth in the late 70s and have seen something like 7 or 8 generations of gaming systems enter the ring. Every single one has been a marked improvement, a startling jump in quality from day one. Except this one. Look at the difference between Atari and NES. NES and Genesis. Genesis and Playstation. Playstation and PS2. PS2 and 360. Now look at this generation. Where's the wow factor? I know, and have always advocated, that games need to offer more than graphics and that the visuals are, in most cases, not the most important virtue of a good game. But when someone's trying to argue to me why the public has a need to "upgrade" I'd expect to see some evidence by now, and I don't.

I'm with Mike completely. I could have gone the rest of my life playing with the current gen graphics we have on PS3 and 360.

Technology is always pushing forward. While this jump may look relatively small. I think that its doing some big things in the social aspect. Everything we do is becoming more interconnected with one another. I'd imagine this is how the borg started. First twitter then twitch, and finally assimilation.
