For Advanced Placement English 11, I must read The Grapes of Wrath over the Summer. Sounds fun! You're already getting homework for a class you don't have until next (school) year? That's idiotic.

Apparently. Most of the AP classes do it. The AP Chemisty class must do some crazy Summer assignment. In fact, they already have their textbooks, and this year isn't even over yet!

Most of the AP classes do it. Not at any of the schools I've been in. Your school is weird. Funny story, we had a student teacher running our class for the majority of this semester. A few weeks ago, he just up and disappeared. It turns out, he had posted pictures of himself and another student teacher (who happened to teach in the room next to ours) in very... sexual situations on Instagram.
It isn't a bunch of rumor hogwash, either. I saw the pictures myself last week. Good lord the people around here are terrible. My cooking teacher's husband killed himself... My closest friend is a bisexual meth smoking cross-dresser... One of my counselors got arrested for hosting parties with alcohol... for students...
I'm sure that there are worse places though.

Most of which being in third world countries and Mexico. Wait, is Mexico a third world country or a first world country?

Okay, let's clarify something here. First World Country does not mean "wealthy" and Third World Country does not mean poor (though people often infer those things when they hear those terms). A First World Country was a military powerhouse on the Western side during the Cold War (the U.S, U.K, France, etc). A Second World Country was a military powerhouse behind the Iron Curtain (U.S.S.R, East Germany, etc). A Third World Country was anyone else (most countries in Africa).

We stop after WWII.

Not to brag, but she brought her classes average standardized testing scores up by something like 200 points, and has a majority of her 1st graders testing at 2nd and 3rd grade in math and reading. She busts her ass to actually do her job within a system that is utterly broken and designed to work against, not for, teachers. ... and thats only going to get worse as "common core" is implemented.

A lot of the teachers I know hate common core. They're wise to do so. It's a terrible idea that's being implemented even more terribly. The closest thing to a viable argument in support of common core that I've heard is that it's better than No Child Left Behind, which is true... but that's like saying "Sure, shooting you in the face sucks, but the last plan was to melt you with acid, so you should be thankful."

I had some great teachers actually but only a few. My High School pre-cal teacher had me at one point to where I thought I could do almost anything in the confines of algebra, geometry, and calculus. I also had a great History professor in college that was so obsesses with getting facts straight and making sure that your paper was good. She butchered many a paper of mine but I'm actually really happy in the end. I took her a bunch of times and by my Senior year, I turned in a paper to her, first draft, that got an A-. I'm not one to brag but that's pretty awesome considering how hard she grades.

I've been reading Gulliver's Travels recently. I'm enjoying it a lot more than I thought I was going to. It's a great book.
