But yeah my main problem with the films is that they turned Legolas into a one man super soldier while they turned Gimli into a bumbling fool...
Gimli was practically the greatest Dwarven warrior of the time, and the Dwarves are a race known for their skill in combat. What they did to him was awful...

Yeah I thought that Gimli was pretty cool in the first film, I have very few qualms about that film in general. It's usually neck and neck with King as my favorite in the series (and comes out on top a little more often). While his dignity was restored a bit in the final film, he was already a walking joke by the second one, something that never fully went away.
Did you ever see the 1979 LOTR animated movie? I think Gimli had a cameo in that.

I really hate Legolas in the movies. He probably did the least out of the entire Fellowship in the book, and yet in the movies he probably could have defeated the entire forces of Sauron by himself.

That's probably why I liked Fellowship so much- it was truly an ensemble, it felt as if every character had several great moments and opportunities to shine. By Towers it started to feel that, despite other characters having their own individual arcs (with the exception of Gimli, really), Aragorn and Legolas were pushed as the ladies' men of the series.

Well to be fair Gimli did have that moment in Twin Towers after Aragorn threw him  where he fought by himself against several dozen orcs and was cutting them down likes giant pieces of meat. That was probably the closest Gimli got to his book self.

I can't lie, I thought that some of the Gimli humor, such as that bit, was kind of cute. The whole "Don't tell the elf" thing was worth a chuckle. It's the basic slapstick- Gimli falling over drunk because he can't hold his liquor against Legolas- that I didn't like. I would have preferred that he be a stoic badass but I didn't hate everything about the humor, I suppose.
Actually Towers had what may be my favorite Gimli moment, when he can't see over the battlements of the Hornburg and asks Legolas what the army looks like on the other side. Legolas says "Shall I describe it to you, or would you like me to get you a box?" to which Gimli gives him a ponderous stare and then breaks out into an almost guilty chuckle. While most people probably interpret that to mean "You're short Gimli", which is probably the intended reaction, I always read the scene as "I can explain the incredible size of the army or I can just bring you a casket" to which Gimli's laughter represents "Ooh, this is going to be fun". It's one of my favorite scenes because of the (likely unintentional) badassery of Gimli that I take from it.

Yeah, it's actually a nice scene for that reason as well. It also did a great job conjuring up the cover of the Two Towers book that I had as a kid.

I intentionally skipped the past two pages thinking "Oh no, spoilers for the Hobbit!"
Then I remembered that I read the book.

To be honest I've been wondering why it took this long for someone to interrupt that whole conversation.

Orlando bloom had the easiest job in those movie. He barely had any lines most of the time he just smiled into the camera

It's exactly how it is in the book by that description.
Only a week or so to go.
Coolaid.
Edit: This was in response to the Smaug fight, damn not being up to date.

Although he *did* kill the same amount of orcs as Legolas in the battles, just not in flashy dan style. Hence the body count between them. Gimli wasn't a bumbling fool, he and Legolas were a little bit of comic relief at times, much in the same way as they were in the books.

Then I remembered that I read the book. At first when I saw Mike's post with the spoiler alert I was just sitting there staring at it. At first my thought process was along the line of "I don't want to spoil this movie, but I really want to know what Mike said" then it became more along the lines of "Oh, derpity, I read the book."

Actually Gimli got more kills than Legolas. The last body was twitching, it didn't count Yeah, exactly. Everyone thinks Legolas was the badass when Gimli actually outscored him in kills. That's what Legolas gets for putting style before skill.

Indeed. They also alluded to his badassery in the films, Gimli took many orcs out at the battle of helms deep, he's the one who went with Aragorn and smashed through them while Legolas was surfing down steps shooting people with arrows. The thought they made Gimli nothing other than comic relief and not Legolas' equal is preposterous.
