Muta also worked in WCW when it was more successful than the WWE 8) (It actually IS a decent comparison, it's not at all idiotic... but the fact is that Muta has worked for the biggest promotions available to him in the markets in which he worked. I agree 100% that if you're an MMA fighter, UFC is the proving grounds. That's why Uriah Faber was a big deal... until he got to UFC and got destroyed in his first fight.) See, that I did not know. Never watched WCW and never cared for Muta. I'll admittedly say that using Muta was a bad example, but nonetheless, it doesn't mean that just because don't get the most success in the biggest business, means that you suck in the business completely, especially when the biggest business isn't the only business around. It kind of does. I can't help but feel like you're failing to grasp the disparity in competition between UFC and any other organization. They might be out there, but the "boots on the ground" reality of it is that they're the minor leagues, and the UFC is where you go when you're at the top of the business. You started the WWE comparison, now complete the thought. UFC = WWE, then what does that make Bellator, et al? The Indies, exactly. Yes, TNA and RoH exist, but if you're a truly great professional wrestler, you're going to the WWE, because that's where truly great professional wrestlers in the U.S. go. Until you prove it in a WWE ring, you're just blowing smoke. You can be in denial about that, but that is why guys like Punk and Bryan will talk all kinds of smack about how great the Indies are, but still eventually shut up, sign on the bottom line, and give every last ounce of blood, sweat, and tears that they have to be able to carry WWE gold. It's also why Kevin Steen will never be anything more than a fat guy doing crazy moves on the internet. It really doesn't help your cause to be in denial about the simple fact that the top competitors go to the UFC. The level of competition there is on average much higher than in even the closest other promotions. Nobody is in Bellator because they want to work for Bellator so badly. They're in Bellator because they're working on a shot at the UFC, or they had their time at UFC and can't cut it anymore.

Urijah Faber didn't get destroyed in his first UFC fight, he infact won his first fight with Eddie Winelaned. he lost a razor thin decision to Dom Cruz in his next UFC fight..and lost an even closer decison to Renan Barao. EDIT: also Urijah Faber was a major star in the WEC, during the time when that was the only place a fighter under 155 lbs. could fight seeing that the UFC didn't have feather or bantamweights. he had an excellent career there, granted he was knocked out for his title and lost the rematch (fighting for 3 rounds with 2 broken hands mind you).

Bellator does have Eddie Alvarez and Michael Chandler, they are their 2 best fighters. Alvarez tried to get into the UFC but was blocked by bjorn rebny over some legal issues. until they get to the UFC and test their skills against the deep talent pool at 155, they will never rise above big fish small pond status..

I could've sworn Faber got beat in his first UFC fight. My bad. I don't really follow UFC... the last attempt I made at all at getting into actually watching MMA was when he was coming up, but once I found out he was going to UFC I stopped caring because I realized he'd turn into the same boring fighter as every other UFC guy.

Yeah despite the fact that I competed in full contact tourneys as a young man and the fact that I respect their skill... I can't watch MMA, it bores the crap out of me. I have no interest in watching a couple of sweaty dudes hug it out in a cage until one of them cries.

Silva is retiring anyway, isn't he? Not that I don't feel bad for his suffering, it's just that his recovery time is considerably less important if he's not thinking of getting back into the ring.

The physical tools for real combat just don't last into the late 30's, that's definitely true.

The physical tools for real combat just don't last into the late 30's, that's definitely true. he is a rare case, he was always known as a dangerous striker and a legit jiu jitsu black belt, but he didn't hit his full stride as a fighter until he broke ties with his old camp and started working on his own. he debuted in the UFC he was 31, with some fanfare, but few saw him as best in the world type stuff.

Holy crap, that dude was 38? It's amazing that he was able to compete at that level at his age.
