Like I've said before, I like to think of the start of the AE/creator of the attitude era is when Bret Hart spit on Vince for three reasons:
1. Bret Hart is great.
2. Having Austin as the front man for anything to do with wrestling is a disgrace to the business.
3. Bret spitting on the boss of the company is about as Attitude as you get. Having a kayfabe attack to the family of the owner is nothing compared to actually spitting on the boss if you ask me. Spitting on somebody shows lack of respect (or attitude).

Yeah, Bret Hart was kind of a crap person, unfortunately. I was so disappointed in him when I watched Wrestling With Shadows, and even more so when I read his own autobiography, where he exposes the kind of person he really is frequently. Even though I idolized the guy as a kid, the reality is that his (backstage) behavior contributed to the birth of the AE just as much as "Stone Cold" ever did.

Exactly. Bret didn't show Attitude in just his kayfabe, he went the limit and was actually like that, which may or may not be bad......although, I haven't read his autobiography. Is it worth a read?

If you're at all interested in the ins and outs of the business in the 80's and 90's, yes. If you're interested in protecting the illusion that Bret Hart was a decent human being, avoid it at all costs. I'd read just about ANY wrestling book, so Hart's autobiography was a no-brainer for me.

I've gotten into reading wrestlers' autobiographies lately. I've read Foley's first and second books, Kurt Angle's book, and Dusty Rhodes' book. Dusty Rhodes is a surprisingly bitter person, by the way, he regularly whines and moans about how much he hates Cruiserweights and pay-per-views.

I can't wait until college is over so I can get around to reading what I really want to read. That being said, I really want to pick up Jericho's books and Edge's autobiography as they are two of my favorite performers.

The bitter ones are the best.

It's also not even as if we're suggesting that everything in them should be taken as gospel. Hart says that Austin was a great wrestler. CLEARLY I didn't take that to heart (no pun intended). They're simply interesting to read.

Hart's shown countless times that he's a terrible judge of talent.
Example: His opinion of Triple H.

He's pretty bitter toward HHH, so I'd get that, if not for the fact that he acknowledges HBK's talent LOL Hart and Foley share one thing in common; all of their friends are "great" and "underrated" performers. Those they dislike are rarely described so generously.

I'm not 100% sure about Foley, he said Flair was a amazing worker, even when they had issues.

I actually agree with what WK said. He did say "rarely" meaning there are exceptions, and Foley's description of Flair is one exception.....

and Daniel Bryan, and Roman Reigns, and Dean Ambrose, and Antonio Cesaro, and Curtis Axel, etc... Yes, I see what you mean. The next generation is like...completely screwed. There's like nobody good... I never denied there was nobody good. I said that there were more weighing down the average, which is true No, no it's not.

i admit i am a bit nostalgic for the wrestling i watched 20-25 years ago. but, the business has changed. how we watch has changed. how guys break in has changed. the backstage goings on is readily available for anyone who wants to read (and believe) it. my issue with the current product is that i want more in ring. i'm not blown over by amazing promos..i'm blown over by people that can put on a good compelling match. so, because i prefer matches over gab, i watch the ppv's and don't pay very much attention to the weekly tv's. i said it before and i say it yet again. the AE was a necessary evil to win the monday night war. the issue there was it ended careers. almost worse than that it desensitized the wrestling fan to the garbage they were doing. you can only push the stuff they were doing so far. at some point you need to pull it back in. they went far to long with it and the "fans" they gained through that era pine away for the good 'ol days of lawlor screaming puppies at a woman young enough to be his granddaughter. today's wwe isn't exactly my cup of tea, but it's certainly better than that.
