The Burton film was LESS ridiculous? The new one delivers the premise in a somber serious fashion so I suppose it could be harder to swallow but that's in keeping with the style of the original films. The Burton movie was basically a silly, extended chase sequence. You... you think that the original movies were somber and serious? I mean, like, when you envision Heston shouting "get your paws off of me" you don't think that was intentionally over the top and silly? To say nothing of the ending? I'm sorry but that Franco piece of crap was unforgivable. Yes, I think the original was played straight because the people involved with the production have made clear that they labored hard to make it that way and also because it's kind of obvious. The original film is satirical, yes, but it was never intended to be cheesy. That it is is the result of the era that it came from and the type of films that we're used to now.

I distinctly recall watching the documentary about the Apes series and hearing the people involved in making it comment on the fact that they were well aware that the premise was ridiculous.

That moment when you realize someone is purposely ignoring you and you realize that you've accomplished exactly what you wished. Yay for being shunned by society!

Yeah yes. Why do you say I don't? Curious Because a lot of the actors you like are critically acclaimed but utterly worthless when it comes to actually, y'know, acting.

If that's the same documentary I'm familiar with then you should also recall that their goal was to make the premise appear legitimate enough that people would take it seriously, to the point that the make-or-break moment came when they produced a test scene to see if anyone laughed. The Apes series is camp today, like everything from the 60s. It wasn't during its initial release.

I withdraw my fandom of the entire series. If they want me to take that crap seriously, I can't be on board. ... and I still find the Franco film to be an insult to human intellect.

I don't hate Phoenix! He's a great actor (I wish he hadn't done that idiotic fake retirement thing though).
Now, Christian Bale? That's an indefensible pick right there, and exactly what I'm talking about. Dude lost a bunch of weight for a role, and automatically became a "great actor"... which is ridiculous because with two exceptions that I can think of, he does the same goony brooding thing in every single movie, and one of those exceptions is the Batman Trilogy, where his acting actually manages to be WORSE than the goony brooding.

You mean like Mark Wahlberg? As far as I know nobody thinks Wahlberg is a great actor. He's a very limited actor who is great at choosing roles. His brother, conversely, is actually pretty talented

Leonardo DiCaprio is a pretty good actor...
Tom Hardy, let me Google him real quick...
The guy who plays Bane? Ugh...
Ryan Gosling I personally never liked...
Christian Bale is worthless and everyone knows it. Dude played Batman and from then on he was terrible. All because he played the worst creation to ever be conceived by human minds.
I agree with Wild on Phoenix from what I have seen of him.
For some reason there is a strange connection your list shares with eachother(excluding Hardy) but I can't put my finger on it...

I'm not saying that you have to take them seriously (and I agree, everyone knows that the premise inherently is), I'm just saying that the films have, for the most part, been delivered in a way that's intended to be. I grant that the bewest film was the most "straight" of them all, and that James Franco is a generally unlikeable person. What I saw of 127 hours was pretty good though, I have to admit.

I think Phoenix and Dicaprio are great actors, easily among the best of their generation. I hear that Tom Hardy is excellent in Bronson. Bale is supposed to be fantastic in American Psycho, which I haven't seen, and I thought that Wahlberg was surprisingly good in Boogie Nights.

Tom Hardy can act. That's one reason why I'm SO critical of how $#@!ing bad DKR was. Hardy should have been able to make even bad dialogue and a stupid plot somewhat entertaining. Instead he jumped on the short bus with everyone else and rode it off the $#@!ing cliff with them.
Hardy was the only part of Inception that deserved the raves that crap movie got, and he's pretty much the reason why Bronson is worth watching.

I love his portrayal as Patrick Bateman and he is really great in out of the furnace. Speaking of that movie Casey Affleck nailed it out of the park. The fake retirement thing was for a mockumentry directed by Casey Affleck. It's pretty funny, I caught a little bit of it. I think it's called I'm still here

Mike! You haven't seen American Psycho??? I'm so disappointed in you! That's one of the all time great mindbenders!
I HATE to acknowledge DiCaprio's talent because I hate that $#@! so much, but he really is good. $#@! Titanic though. That movie is one of the worst pieces of sentimental garbage ever put to celluloid. He made up for it with Shutter Island though, the movie that should have gotten the rave reviews that inexplicably went to Inception.

I can only remember his role in DKR. Also I can't remember anything about Inception...
