What are the best and what are the worst? in my opinion the best is: The Xbox 360 controller (i'm not fanboying but i like it better than ps3's) and the worst is: The OUYA controller or the gamerglove for NES.
Rules: No swearing

Although Wildnight will surely come in with his scientific study argument about how they are the death of your hands, I do still like the PS2/3 controller best.
Second would be 360's design.
Third as much as I hated it, the GameCobe design.
Then forth the 3 handed N64 design.

My two favorite controllers would have to be the original NES (for simplicity and durability) and the 360 controller (for ergonomic comfort). I enjoyed the Super NES controller as well, I just enjoyed the smooth design and feedback of the buttons.
Worst controller? Nintendo 64. I think there's hardly any question to this. Though Jaguar and Intellivision were terrible as well.

The original NES controller sucked LOL I never noticed when I was young, but we broke out the NES at my friend's house not too long ago, and those controllers were hideously ill-fitted to adult human hands

The fit was terrible and if you used them too long they would "cut" into your palms and make them sore. However, they were revolutionary at the time because of the cross pad and the fact that there was actual feedback to the buttons rather than the mushy cramminess of the Atari controllers before them.
And, again, because you could whip those fuckers against concrete and they wouldn't break. I adore the 360 controller but if I so much as think of a naked woman near that thing the spring keeping the battery pack in place will break off.

I just realized that there was a "no swearing" rule in the opening post. Lol sorry bro.

Y'know I've never had a problem with the battery pack on a 360 controller. I get the same problem over and over; button fatigue. You know what was a truly awful controller? Atari 7800.

See that's actually really weird, never once in my life have the buttons worn out on any controller, ever. Yet I've lost probably three Xbox 360 controllers due to thumbstick jam or those stupid battery packs coming loose / breaking off. Granted some of this was a result of my own abuse but in most cases we're talking a careless toss, not a running pitch against a garbage truck.
The 7800 controller was pretty crappy but at least the joystick sprang back into center position, unlike the crunchy, mushy 2600 controllers.

My favorite controller, not saying it was the best, but was my personal favorite was the Gamecube controller. Don't hit me.
My least favorite was the N64 controller. That thing was terrible.
The best one though as far as being built for the human hand is probably the 360 controller.

I've had the R2 button wear after years of use on PS2, probably with WWE games being so R2 use heavy with reversals. Otherwise no issues with controllers at all. Maybe you should stop holding the 360 controller in a vice grip mike??

I don't remember anything about the GameCube controller... which tells me it was pretty middle of the road as far as I was concerned LOL

Unlike most people I'll admit to my horrendous temper and the controllers it has cost me. The Gamecube controller was weirdly ergonomic. As in, it literally felt as if they took a glob of clay, gripped it in a gaming position, and then fired it in a kiln to produce the end product. It glommed neatly into the hand in such a way that it looked like a purple nightmare with asymmetrical buttons slathered willy-nilly all over it. It was ugly as fuck and felt so unconventional that it was actually kind of awkward, yet at the same time served its purpose relatively comfortably.

I'm hearing A LOT of hate for the PS4 controller from my friends, particularly in that the controller has a glaring blue light on top that reflects off of your TV screen and can't be turned off. Apparently it's causing them headaches fairly quickly if they play in a dark room.

GameCube Controller: Strangely enough I liked the way that dippy little yellow thumbstick felt. It had a smooth firmness that the N64 toothpick could have used.
